A plan for the National Museum

The National Museum of Saudi Arabia is the indoor half of a Riyadh day. It is large. A useful visit chooses a route instead of trying to honor every hall.

Eight permanent halls, in the museum’s order

The museum opened on 23 January 1999 inside the King Abdulaziz Historical Center. The building is widely credited to the architect Raymond Moriyama. The museum’s own FAQ describes eight galleries for the permanent exhibitions and two more for temporary shows. Another page on the museum’s site has described six main galleries. Use the plan you are given at the desk. Closures for a change of display are normal.

  1. 01

    Man and the Universe

Ground floor. The peninsula’s setting: geology, earlier environments, and fossils. The museum describes large-animal fossils and human bone fragments in this hall. It is a sensible first room because later galleries assume a landscape.

  2. 02

    Arabian kingdoms

Cities and trade routes from the fourth millennium BC toward the fourth century CE, with material from places such as Qaryat al-Faw and Tayma. This is the indoor introduction to names you may later meet outdoors, including the Nabataean world of Hegra.

  3. 03

    The pre-Islamic era

From about the fourth century CE to the Prophetic mission: markets, poetry, and daily life. Still on the ground floor in the museum’s own description.

  4. 04

    The Prophet’s mission

First floor. The museum presents the life of the Prophet Muhammad, manuscripts, and the migration from Makkah to Madinah. It has described a large ceramic mural of that journey. Read what the hall provides. This website does not add a religious instruction.

  5. 05

    Islam and the Arabian Peninsula

From the period in Madinah through later Islamic eras, with objects tied to calligraphy, scholarship, architecture, and craft.

  6. 06

The First and Second Saudi States

The state established in 1744, and the second state from 1824. This is the historical preface to Diriyah, not a tour of the earthen site.

  7. 07

    Unification

The formation of the modern kingdom, commonly told from the 1902 taking of Riyadh onward.

  8. 08

Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques

The history of the pilgrimage and of the mosques in Makkah and Madinah, including models. The hall is not a permit, a sermon, or a booking for travel to either city.

Ninety minutes, or three hours

If you have about ninety minutes, use Man and the Universe, Arabian kingdoms, and one upstairs hall that matches the rest of your trip. Diriyah points toward the Saudi states. A later AlUla journey points toward the kingdoms gallery. If you have three hours, follow the museum from the ground floor upward and accept that temporary rooms may be shut.

The museum’s FAQ has said that admission to the permanent galleries is free of charge, and that some exhibitions or events need a reservation. Treat that as a current notice from the museum, not a promise from us. Confirm before you go. We do not hold tickets, because there is nothing on this site to sell.

The address, and what we do not picture

The museum publishes a contact location on King Saud Road in Al-Murabba, Riyadh, inside the historical center. These notes do not include a photograph of the galleries or of the facade. The aerial below is Riyadh, the city you cross to reach Al-Murabba. It is not a picture of a display case.

A city photograph does not prove you have seen a hall, just as a hall does not replace Hegra or At-Turaif.

In summer, late morning through mid-afternoon is the sensible slot, because you are indoors. Pair it with an early Diriyah walk or with nothing outdoors. The grounds of the historical center are exposed. They are the approach, not a second museum. How the ride fits the rest of Riyadh is on the city note.

At the door

  • Dress so shoulders and knees are covered. Add a light layer for the cold interior.
  • Photography rules are posted by hall. A manuscript case can be under a stricter rule than the room around it.
  • Use the desk for bags if staff ask. Do not guess that a cloakroom is optional.
  • Prayer times affect the city around you more than they rewrite the gallery labels. Still leave a margin if you have a fixed ride afterward.
  • Children do well in the first hall’s large objects. You do not have to complete every floor to make the visit worthwhile.
